Agree with #1 - Take the bus to Udon Thani or Nong Khai, which ever leaves first - both take about 12 hrs & then take the International bus to Vientiane. It takes about 2 hrs from Udon, 1 hour from Nong Khai all the way to Vientiane. There's between 3 to 5 buses leave each depot daily.Siamdaze

Fastest way of course is taking a plane. You have several options, either take Lao Airlines, or if you want to save some money, fly Nok (3 times a week) to Udon Thani and then continue by bus to Vientiane.
