Organizing a tour in Lhasa

Hi there,

my girlfriend and I will arrive in Beijing on July 18 and plan to take the train to Lhasa on the same day. Currently we are struggling with the Tibet Permission. So far I contacted numerous tour agencies or hotels but it seems no longer possible to get only a permission. They all want to sell at least a three day tour. I was also told that it is not possible to organize / join a tour while being in Lhasa, everything has to be pre-booked and Chinese tours do not accept foreigners. Is this only a nice trick to sell tours or are there indeed any limitations? We thought that arranging everything in Lhasa would be the better / cheaper option...

Is there by instant someone out who is interested in doing a trip in direction of Everest Base Camp and do there some trecking starting around July 21?

I am looking forward to your feedback.

Lars

Hi Olberg!

How did you get the train tickets? We are trying to book them but it seems not to be possible without booking a guided tour. And where are you arranging the permit for Tibet?

We just want the train tickets and the permit, we are trying to get them from Beijing but it seems difficult. Please everything you could tell us would be useful.

About the tour around Lhasa, I've read the cheapest way is to arrange it in Lhasa and that it's quite possible.

Thank you very much!!

Thanks for the reply.

@ Chogori: I have no tickets so far. I contacted chongchong (post #1) and he can arrange train tickets and the permission. It indeed seems to be the case that a tour is needed. But if the "tour" is only spending the first night in a certain (budget) hotel, it is absolutely fine. :-)

Does anyone have some information how much a standard 8-day Lhasa-EBC-tour costs if it is arranged in Lhasa? So far I found on the internet tour operators that charge roughly 8000 RMB per person.

Hi Olberg,

How much do the tickets and the permit cost this way? Please tell me what does the "tour" mean when you know!

I haven't arranged any tour from Lhasa yet but I asked once and somebody told me that going from Lhasa to Katmandu could cost around 250-300 euros (6 days) so I think it's quite expensive the one you say (though I don't know what includes each one).

Thanks!

Are you sure thats 8000RMB p/p and not for the vehicle?? A very lucrative job if they go with it full. We paid 3700RMB without a guide from FIT at Banok Shol.FIT

We never really grow up, we only learn how to act in public.

Wouldn't trust #1 with your hard-earned cash. And yep, keep out touts!
Think the prices are on Leohostel.com. But, if you send money to leohostel in advance, make bloody sure they buy your train tickets in advance, and not when you arrive.

Hey Lars,

I plan a Beijing-Lhasa trip by Train at the 17th of July. I have a friend living in Beijing who went to the Railway station to get the tickets today. He only got Hard Seat tickets, the rest was sold out. So you should be extremely lucky if you still get a sleeper ticket for the 18th (or somebody is not telling you the truth). Some people in this forum say that an upgrade from hard seat to a sleeper ticket might be possible on the train. I hope that'll work and try it. Otherwise it'll be a horrible journey :(
