2 weeks in Yunnan

Help!
We are planning to go to Yunnan and Sichun province for 2 weeks. We would like to see some Tibeten culture as well as the beautiful scenery of Yunnan province.

There is so much info on the threads about Lijiang, Dali, Zhongdian and Deqen that we are very confused.

Our plan is to take a train from Beijing to Kunming. After that we are lost as to where to go. We would like to end up back in Chengdu for a couple of days.

So, the questions are:
1. Is it worth going to Deqen to see Tibeten culture or can we see it along the way to Zhongdian?
2. Can we go from Zhongdian to Chengdu by train/bus or do we have to go to Chengdu via another route?
3. How many days would you suggest staying in each place? We do have a Chinese student with us so the language is no problem. We won't be doing a lot of difficult hiking but a little is ok.
4. Anywhere else in that area that is a must to see?

We are most interested in the scenery, culture and atmosphere of the towns. We would be staying in hostels or in hotels around the 200 yuan a night range. Any suggestions about accommodation would also be appreciated.

We will probably have more questions later but this should be a start. Thank you for any assistance you can give us.

Route ...1. Kunming - Dali (old town)
...2. Dali - Lijiang
...3. Lijiang -(tiger leaping gorge)- Zhongdian
...4. Zhongdian - Deqin
...5. Deqin - Zhongdian
...6. Zhongdian - Litang (overnite along the way but can't rember the name of the town)
...7. Litang - Kanding
...8. Kanding - Chengdu
this would be your most comprehensive circle route to take between Konming and Chengdu. you'll be in Tibetian areas on this route from tiger leaping gorge to kanding.
kunming to dali is the only part of this route that has a train the rest is bus travel. with your limited time i would say to drop either dali or lijiang( you can get to lijiang from kuming by bus direct but its a long day) and TLG , also deqin. the big problem is that distances are long and buses slow in w.schuan.

an alternitve route would be to go from lijiang to Lugu Hu (v. nice lake, matriacal society, musuo people moved from tibet long ago) and on to Panzhahua? in s.sichuan on the chengdu/kunming train line. not really tibetian area but it's lovely around the lake.
anyway hope thing doesn't add to your confusion......................alll the best

my girlfriend and i did a trip in north-western yunnan near the tibetan border over the new year. the trip was amazing and perfect for anyone wanting to travel off the beaten path, see some amazing wilderness, and to get a real insight into tibetan culture without having to cross the border. all the info is at the link below...
