Well, I am not a single woman, but I would say it is pretty damn safe here. Being a single woman should not pose any significant problems. Occasionally, there are reports of bad things happening to single women in some areas. For example, a girl getting raped and killed. These things are seemingly more rare than you would find in my home city of Washington DC. So, I really wouldn't worry about it. I have met loads of single women traveling alone. They are not put off by it. As far as violence is concerned, it is concentrated in the extreme south which you will discover when you get to researching those "tidbits" you mentioned.

I came to Thailand on my own as a single female and never felt remotely threatened (so much so I never left!!) Be very careful if you're out drinking with people you don't know very well...but that's just common sense. There are some scams out there that try and take your money but it's all going with your gut feeling and again, using common sense (I personally have never experienced this but heard about it a lot). As to the violence in the south it's isolated to 3 border provinces near Malaysia so shouldn't interfere with your holiday.Posted By: VenessaP -- 28-Jan-2010 15:01
