Accessing your own $

Hi All

Just wondering what you use to access your money while you are travelling thru SE Asia. Just your normal eftpos card from home? Visa?
The fees stink from oz. About $20 for every $750 i pull out.
Anyone found any brilliant other options...
Would love to hear what others do.
Cheers,
Brydie

$20 dollars per transaction?? That's outrageous.

When I made cash withdrawals from Thai banks, my Canadian bank "only" charged me $5 Canadian. And the Oz and Canuck buck are not too far apart in value.

I wear a belt and braces generally. CC/ATM card TC's, $US and whatever else currency I happen to be carrying. I'm a big fan of traveller's cheques. You will get people telling you waste of time blah blah woof woof, If you ever get robbed you will be thankful you bought TC's, I was. Am Ex replaced my stolen cheques the day I arrived at their office.

From Oz
I strongly recommend applying for the Wizard Clear Advantage Mastercard.

No fees or margin on foreign purchases or ATM withdrawals.
Load the card up with a credit balance before you go and fee free ATM withdrawals !!

i am with NAB and i get charged $4 per transaction(eftpos only), nothing more. you could also get a Cash Passport that Travel Ex and Visa have, they charge 3.75AUD per transaction and you can lock in your exchange rate as well (ie US$, Pound, Euro, AUD).

I always use my ATM card and take out enough for a couple of days to save on fees, but my next trip i will be using a mix of Eftpos, Travellers Chqs, Cash and a Cash Passport.

Wow, you guys get taken, in the States the norm is about 1.50 to 2.00 per transaction, depending, then whatever the foreign bank charges, sometimes nothing, so you just , withdraw more less often and it works out to be a very small percentage. For example, take out 200 US with Siam Commercial, no fees, and they charge you .5 to 1 percent, not too bad.

Shop all your banks for a cheap one. I found everything from $3 USD AND 3% per withdrawal; to $0 and 1% per.

#6 "electronic funds transfer (at) point of sale", refers to using a card(eg debit card) to transfer funds to pay for a puirchase, may also be able to withdraw additional cash at the same time, common in supermarkets in Australia, savea making 2 transactions, one top pay for purchases and the other to withdraw cash at a hole in the wall.
