China Visa Application Question

I am looking at the application form for a visa to China. I notice that it says, something about "who invited you?' Since, like many other independent travelers, I don't have an invitation, and and I am not part of a tour group. What should I put down in those blanks?

I am planning to do the usual tourist thing: Beijing, Pingayao, Xian, overland through Yunan, Lijiang, and maybe try to visit Tibet. I hope top do the train and bus thing within China. I was planning to fly into Beijing and exit through Laos.

Should I just list the cities I plan to visit? Do I need to have documented tickets or reservation? What about the question, of who invited you?

Thanks for your help.

My Aussie version of the Visa application form don't ask 'who invited you?'

Instead Q12 ask, 'Purpose of journey and place to visit in China? My answer, tourism, Beijing, Xian, Giangzhou'.

Q13, Company or person to visit in China?...I left it blank.

When I applied for my first Visa in 2002, I went to the Consulate prepared, armed with itinerary, proof of funds and airtickets...but no letter of invitation. No CHinese bureacrats at teh COnsulate bothered to look at any of the items I took along with me. All they were interested was my passport, fees and application form. I will be applying for my fourth multiple entry visa in November.

Good luck.

"It don't matter to me."

Yes, leave blank the part about who invited you. Don't mention Tibet. And the purpose of your journey is not tourism (which sounds a little like terrorism) but sightseeing.

The OED defines tourism as "travelling for pleasure" -- with cites from Thackeray ("No doubt, ere long . . . the rush of London tourism will come this way") to Jeffrey Archer ("Tourism is the chief source of income for the Principality") -- so go right ahead and use it. You'll be in good company.
