Almaty to Shanghai overland

Hello,

I'm thinking about travelling from Almaty/Kazakhstan to Shanghai overland. Does anyone know how long it would take (not including any possible stops)? I suppose one would travel by train and bus.

Thanks for any information.
Cheers,
e.

Almaty -- Korgas: 12 hours
Korgas -- Urumqi: 14 hours
Urumqi -- Shanghai: 44 hours
Total: 70 hours = around 5.5 days.
I think reckoning around 7 days for the trip might be a little more reasonable.
Cheers!

Ellyse,

Thanks for your quick and informative reply. As I don't have too much time that's probably a bit too long. I've just been looking at flights from Almaty to Shanghai (rather expensive at approx. EUR 550). There also don't seem to be too many airlines flying between Urumqi and Shanghai (or any other place eg. Nanning). Do you know anything about that?

Thanks,
e.

How much does it cost you to fly Almaty -- Urumqi? I think there're flights for Urumqi -- Shanghai on China Eastern, Shanghai Airlines and China Southern but they're usually pretty expensive. I'm seeing current prices of around 150 EUR or so for the cheapest.
Cheers!

BTW most passport holders can easily obtain a Kazakh visa in Urumqi as there is a consular agent there. Look on the Central Asia branch for details. I and others have posted them before.
