Less crowded towns?

I would like to see some smaller towns with traditional architecture and way of life. Lijiang and Fenghuang sound great, but also incredibly packed with tourists. Are there other similar spots where I won't be jostling elbows?

Wuyuan was great when I went in May 2005. However it's now in the 10th edition of Lonely Planet, so I'm not sure if it has become much more touristy.
Also read this thread for less touristy options around Huangshan.
Cheers!

Less crowded? China?

Consider a different country, perhaps another continent.

Perhaps you need a time machine: China is bent on modernisation, and the areas that charmed me back in 1990 no longer exist.

Oh I forgot. You might want to check out the Hakka roundhouses in Fujian province. Just don't go for the ones in the guidebooks.
Cheers!

#4, I would think that Pingyao is a bit too crowded and touristy. Even more so than Fenghuang.
Cheers!

People mountain, people sea, everywhere.

Listen carefully to my speech, and let this be your consolation.
Bear with me that I may speak,And after I have spoken, mock on.....

And I look forward to seeing Wuyuan in May next year, but I don't expect it to be empty.

Hi Russell,
Since you like the Less Crowded Towns,I think southeast Guizhou is a good choice to you!I know some roads to the villages are not so good, but the minority villages are realy worth visiting. If you are late for 4 or 5 year, there are must be too many tourists here since there are 39 kinds of Miao(Hmong) and other minorities here, which attracts more and more people to come.Hope you have a good time in Guizhou.
