Best swimming beaches on Koh Tao

Heading to Koh Tao at the end of August for some serious lazing around. But lazing aside - I do like to start the day by swimming laps - preferably of a nice bay with water that isn't a foot deep for miles. Looks like some of the beaches on Koh Tao are very shallow - which would you recommend for my pre-breakfast laps? (and diving - not scuba but body - from rocks is also a pastime). Thanks in advance for your advice

I second the Ao Luek recommendation. I was recently there (mid-June) and the swimming was fantastic; deep, clean water and lots of tropical fish to swim with.

Hi

sand bottom tends to be affected by the toilet flushing going straight out many places :-(

Try beautiful Jansom Bay bay - smal private beach (you pay a small fee) very nice and clean.

i stayed once at Laem Thian on the east side of tao.

we had a bungalow and i could just climb over the balcony and down a few rocks into the sea. it's deep after a few metres and there are a number of reef sharks and loads of other fish you can spot.

Yep, Ao Thian OK, Ao Luek plus Ao Tanote and Ao Hin Wong, all on the east coast, have deep water for swimming.
Ao Thian and Ao Luek have the nicest stretch of sand, although one poster has mentioned lots of rubbish on the beach at the latter. Bob and creep, what was your take?
Ao Hin Wong had NO beach. But it sure is a nice location.

I have more info on these in the link below. There was also a good post in the past few days along similar lines.

Okay, I found that post. It reminds me that Ko Nangyuan at Tao also has nice deep water for swimming. More mid-range in standard for accom. that post

Have you ever actually stepped foot on either of these beaches Tezza? I seem to remember you didn't move your arse from the restaurant at Ao Leuk and you seem to think people have to pay to get into Ao Thian OK.

I have also stayed at the Leam Thian Resort (Have you Tezza?) The beach there is very small and almost disappears at high tide. The coral in front of the resort is mostly dead and there is a lot of trash on the sea floor. There are lots of sharks there.

So are you saying that Ao Leuk is also a good place to stay. I understand there is a new road oin there. Dos this make it a little easier to get to nightlife if the lazing and the laps get too much for me?

Still no answer from Tezza I see.

He presents himself as THE beach expert and makes statements like "Ao Thian and Ao Luek have the nicest stretch of sand".... yet it is apparent that he has never actually stepped foot on either of these stretches of sand himself.

TT is a travel forum. Most people are here to help fellow travellers but they don't feel a compulsion to post on every single thread that touches on their "speciality" year in year out. There's always someone else who can help because it's a big forum with many other knowledgeable people on it. Often there are two or three more of less identical questions on the same page anyway.

Yet Tezza scans the TT daily for islands/beaches/weather posts and replies to every single one that isn't an obvious troll. He plugs his blog as if his life depends on it. Why? Not only are there posters who can answer just as well as him, there are also far better resources on the net a mere mouse click away. For example, when people ask weather questions why doesn't he just link in the Travelfish interactive weather map instead of telling them to wade through his weather blog?

And to cap it all he has a behind the scenes PM campaign against certain TT posters. He's so obsessed with his personal vendetta that he doesn't even realize that some of the people he PMs are trolls ... like Kohlibong who's just been banned (again).
