Suggestions in Southern China

I will be traveling to The Shenzhen Area for 8 days at the end of July. What are the exciting things to do? I will have to fly to Hong Kong. What is the easiest way to get to Shenzhen from Hong Kong Airport?

I have been to Hong Kong in the past, so I have no need to go there. I heard that Hainan and Macau are exciting. Does anyone have any suggestions there? I am considering to going to one of those places.

I would appreciate the feedback. Thank you so much!!!!!

What exactly are you interested in seeing/doing/experiencing? Are you looking for shopping, scenery, or something else?
Cheers!

Thanks for the replies. I am into temples, beaches, site seeing, mountains. I heard that Hainan is dangerous. Is that true? Any tips?

Direct boat.

Both are major centres for the commercial sex industry, if that's your idea of excitement. Apparently Macau has a brothel conveniently located beside the ferry terminal.

Personally, my main memory of Macau is of a pilgrimage to the church housing some of the bones of St Francis Xavier (only some: the rest of him is in India). That was exciting enough for me, but not everyone shares my taste.

You should definitely see the Chen Clan Academy (Chen Jia Ci) in Guangzhou.
Hainan is dangerous? Yes in terms of ripping you off. Not really otherwise.
China's not really known for its beaches.
Other worthwhile destinations would be Yangshuo, and the Hakka roundhouses near Yongding (in Fujian province).
You really don't need to go to Shenzhen.
Cheers!

Why is Hainan supposed to be dangerous?

I assume you're going to Shenzhen for some reason other than your interest in "temples, beaches, site seeing, mountains", as Shenzhen has none of those, and not much else of interest either.

Macau is easy to get to, and has unique temples, churches, interesting history, some sights to see, and great food and wine. Macau has one (mediocre) beach -- the beaches are definitely better in Hainan.

Thanks for all the responses so far. As far as post 4 I am not into the brothel thing as I am going with my girlfriend.

Ellyse: Thanks for the suggestion about Yangshuo. Have you or anyone been to Lushun? If yes, how does Yangshuo compare with Lushun?

So Hainan is not dangerous, except for people trying to rip you off? Where are some good places to go or stay at in Hainan? I think I will rule out Macau for now because I would need visas and other issues with that.

As for getting to Shenzhen from Hong Kong Airport, do I need to go to Hong Kong City to get transportation to Shenzhen or can I take a train or bus from the airport.

Thank you so much for helping me!!

Sorry, I've not been to the same Lushun, I think. I was at the one that's near Dalian, totally different places I'm sure.
There're direct buses from Hong Kong airport to Shenzhen. Check out the following links: CTS and Trans-Island (scroll right down to the end).
Cheers!

Where do you come from that needs visas for Macau? Most countries don't. You haven't said why you are going to Shenzhen. I would travel from HKG to Macau and then to Shenzhen either by bus via Zhuhai or by direct ferry. Guangzhou is also worth a day or 2. There is also Foshan where the pottery is made.

You could see the Bogue Forts at Humen, and the Opium War museum. There's not much else worth seeing near Shenzhen.

The 2 sites are both at Humen, yes?

Yes, both at Humen, which is just north of Shenzhen. The forts were built to protect the Pearl River approaches to Guangzhou.

Kereru: Sorry to confuse you. My friend is Chinese and she does not have a passport, so that is the reason for not going there.

Ellyse: Thanks for the links for the buses and the great advice.

Cinematic Gwailo: Thanks for the Humen suggestion. How far is that from Shenzhen? Is that a day trip or something to consider staying a few days?

If anyone has any suggestions or tips on any of the above places mentioned in this thread please let me know. That would be much appreciated. Thanks everyone!!!
