Malaria pills

I land in BK july 8, and wants to spend a few days there before going to Siem Riep (cambodia)

Should I buy malaria pills at a pharmacy in thailand or should I buy them here in denmark (read very expensive)

Is it possible to buy the same brands as in europe?

...or is it necessary to use any at all?

(traveling cambodia for 3 weeks: angkor wat, koh ker, kratie, Phnom penh, sihanoukville, kaoh kong, siem riep)

and the 2 weeks of diving and relaxing in thailand.

Whats your experience?

Kenno)

Malaria pills can be a dangerous drug. I suggest getting them in your home country where you can speak to your doctor. Some people have nasty reactions to some types. So you really need to know what your taking.

From my personal experiance. I took the once a day pill (forget the name) and after 3 days of taking it I could not sleep for days. No joke, just stayed awake for 2 solid days. I stopped taking it and restarted a week later to see if this was the problem, it was. So I did not bother with them again. Some people become quite ill from it.

But again see your doctor for the full pro's and con's

Nobody will explicitly tell you not to take them. You might try to sue if you do get malaria ;)
Ask you doctor then decide. Nobody I know takes anti- malarials on a regular basis in Siem Reap.

OP, where you're going I would not take malaria prophylaxis. Chances of getting malaria are very, very small, and if you do get it, it can be better treated not having taken prophylaxis. Also resistancy against different types of prophylaxis is building, so probably you would have to take different kinds of prophylaxis.

The doctors back home quite often have no clue about the exact regios here, better check with the regional health centers.

Glad to see you're doing this one mozzies.... it gets ever so tedious having to repeat the same thing endlessly just because people can't be arsed to scroll down two posts or use the search engine before they post questions about malaria and malaria pills! ;-)

A few years ago an article appeared in the Oriental Bird Club's Bulletin about fake anti-malarial tablets being widely used in Southeast Asia. These tablets were responsible for dreadful side effects (can't remember what they were) and obviously they were useless against malaria. Whatever the decision taken I would say it is better to get them from your doctor at home.

Whether to take them or not is tricky to say. I recently spoke to someone who was attending a conference in Thailand on malaria, and he said that he doesn't take anti malrials in Asia - avoid getting bitten is better. Getting malaria is rare in Thailand. Having said that a collegue of mine died of it in 2003 having caught it in Chiang Mai province. Another friend of mine caught malaria in northern Cambodia in 2004 and was ill for 2 years. He still has a major problem with his foot and will never be able to walk properly again from a complication with the area around the bite.
