Koh Chang????

Any advice about Koh Chang would be appreciated.
What beach areas might be best. Looking to spend less than 1000b a night for bungalow.
Can you rent motorbikes.
Most important is it worth going. I am currently living in Chiang Mai and have been to Koh Samui many times but am looking for someplace that hasn't been completely taken over by expensive resorts.
I would like to spend a month and take Muai Thai instruction.
Thanks for all of you help.

Don't think you'll like Ko Chang.

Seriously, consider another Ko.

"someplace that hasn't been completely taken over by expensive resorts"

Only one single beach on Koh Chang comes to mind there, for the whole rest of it, you're a couple of years too late:

Long Beach in the most remote, South-East corner of the island - only one bungalow-guesthouse there (and as that, one of the nicest ones I know!), the Treehouse Lodge. Beautiful setting - but very remote indeed. You can rent motorbikes right in front of the door, but that's it, nothing else around apart from jungle - it's around 10 minutes by motorbike to get to the next local restaurant or small shop - and half an hour at least to the next over-developes las-vegas-style tourist area with internet (Whitesands Beach).

I absolutely loved it there, though...

Probably Koh Mak (South of Koh Chang) would be something for you... Or the other Koh Chang on the Andamans (just South of the Burmese border)... Poster Tezza has got a good and informative blog on small, not-so-developed islands in Thailand:link.

Safe travels!

the usual contradictory mush. Where the hell do you think you're going to find a beach resort that offers Muay Thai instruction that isn't highly commercialised?

Well Koh Samui is one place that has a great Muay Thai gym that has been in Lamai for years before it was completely overun. I'm not lookng for a deserted island. Just a place where there are still nice inexpensive bungalows and a few places to have some fun. And not a suit shop every 10 feet and cd shops everywhere and Macdonalds, you get the picture.
Thanks for your help.

Siam Beach resort is perfect! On long/lonely beach. It has bungalows on the beach, on the hill and a few upscale rooms as well. Great pool and a small restaurant, though, its easy to find other places to eat too, just by walking down the beach. One of the best places I've been to. I don't recommend staying at the popular big beaches on the Northern end of the islan, too much croud etc. Siam Beach resort is at the Southern end....

#6: I agree - Siam Beach at Lonely Beach probably would come closest, although there is no Muay Thai gym near, as far as I know... However, after they have also built a beach bar right in front of the bungalows, I could not sleep without earplugs anymore because of the music and the noise of drunken people. Should be quiet during the rainy season, though...
