If you can't see the light at the end of the tunnel, take a torch.

Even though you normally would not need a LOI, I am pretty sure that the embassy in UB requires one.

Yeah, the bureaucracy can be a problem. While I don't keep track of all visas and consulates, I do keep track of many in these region. I could be wrong and would love an update if you do get a Kazakh visa in UB.

well - I've now gone ahead and posted one of my passports to the UK - applying for the visa from there seems a little easier - as long as all of the international posting works out. Next on the list is Kyrg . . . and waiting for my other passport to come back with the Mongolian visa so i can actually LEAVE!!If you can't see the light at the end of the tunnel, take a torch.

Again, best to get the Kyrgyz visa before you depart. I believe that it is another one that might require a LOI if you don't apply at home.

what is LOI ?
"The proper function of man is to live, not to exist."
--(from Jack London's 'Tales of Adventure')
"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover."
-- Mark Twain

LOI = letter of invitation. Many countries of the former soviet union require an official letter of invitation and sometimes an accommodations voucher as well. Some other countries also require LOI when not applying for the visa in your home country.
