Visa change

Hello TT,
Iam just about off to China in a few days. I have a single entry visa. However, is it possible to change it to a multiple entry visa? Iam thinking of going to Nepal than back. cheers...

Don't think so. You'll have to go to Hong Kong and get a double-entry there (one entry to get back into China from Hong Kong, one entry to get back into China from Nepal). And it'll cost you.

Or get a single-entry in Hong Kong and fly to Nepal from Hong Kong.

You might be able to change to a multiple-entry by asking at the Public Safety Bureau in a major Chinese city. However, if you are planning on going Tibet - Nepal - Tibet, you are in store for a lot of permit problems unrelated to your visa; it will be a hassle.

Thanks for your info. I was thinking of going through Tibet to Nepal. From there, fly back to Shanghai to catch flight home. cheers...

You should read about going from Nepal to Tibet and then into China. As I understand it, your Chinese visa will be cancelled when you enter Nepal and the only new Chinese visa you can obtain will be a group tourist visa which is difficult to impossible to change for solo use.

Try reading through this information from our local Tibet expert: Travel in Tibet FAQs. Scroll about half way down the page to find the appropriate question and answer.

So I am not sure that getting a multiple entry Chinese visa is going to be of help to you given your intentions.

Basically stick to China and TAR and forget Nepal or forget returning to China.
