Bangkok to Koh Chang

We are planning to go down from Bangkok to Koh Chang to spend a week or so on the island.
What is the best way to travel? By air, bus, taxi or what? And what is the best way to go from mainland to the island?
We have not made any hotel reservation yet, but we understand that it is low season now with attractive prices also at upscale resorts.
Thanks

There are 2 Ko Changs, but I assume you are talking about the one inside the Gulf of Thailand, near the Cambodian border. Once you are in Bangkok you can get there very easy. Most tourists take a joint minivan/boat ticket, which is available in most tourist parts of the city. It takes about 6 hours from end to end. If you want to save a coupla bucks you get a bus from the eastern bus terminal to Trat, then pickup taxi to the ferry and buy the ticket on arrival, boat takes 45 min to the island.

The story is the same for the other Koh Chang (nearer the East side of the country, near the Cambodian border), a but/ferry ticket can be bought from Bangkok. Can't remember prices though.

If you're going to this Koh Chang, I can recommend the Treehouse on Lonely Beach for accommodation (unless they have finally closed this one and moved to the other side of the island??)

Funny, #1 and 2, you're talking about the same Koh Changs...

...and the Treehouse Lodge has closed down on Lonely Beach... sad, but true....

the cheap minibuses can be booked in the KSR area, but prices escalate outside there. You'll find travel agents wanting 700 baht or even more in Siam Square when it's no more than 500, and probably less than that, on KSR. And these shorter minibus journeys are OK. It's basically only the longer routes to Chiang Mai and down south that you hear the robbery stories about.

if you're staying anywhere near the skytrain or MRT, bus from Ekkamai will be cheaper and maybe even quicker. It won't stop for 30 minutes en route and isn't obliged to pick up a multitude of passengers from various locations before the driver is able to put his foot on the accelerator pedal.

Bangkok Airways will fly you there for 2000 baht but the airport is 20km from the ferry terminal.

Yes Tree house is closed, I agree with staying at lonley beach. I stayed at a small bungalow place owned by a german and his wife his name was Thomas and I think the bussiness was I think called Magies bungalows, but I think he was planning to change it to sunflower bungalows. Anyway a short walk to the beach and not as loud as staying right on the beach, sometimes you do feel like sleeping.

If you are going down south or north. I recomend trains. I hate busses. you can walk around on the train, go to the restaurant car, party your ass off, then go to sleep in your bed, wake up then you are there. they are about 900 baht for a overnight trip.

i travel down it koh chang almost weekly. lots of options but i take government bus 99 form eckamai bus station (easy 2 get 2 on the skytrain) At 7:45 (which is the one I take there is another one at 9:15) now both these buses go directly to the pier. This saves going into trat which lengthens the journey somewhat. the bus stops at the first ferry pier which 'tamachat" where a single ticket to the island is 100 baht and return is 120 baht the bus then goes on to the centrepointpier ( no point doing this). the bus uses all the expressways and arrives around 13:30 on a good day. once on the island you will be greeted by the taxi mafia....now a songthaeu to whitesand beach is 50 baht unless and at this time of the year often the taxi is not full you have the choice to wait for another ferry (30minutes) or split a higher price up amongst whoever is there..... last couple of times 4 people and we paid 100 baht each...that is not so bad . Anyhow cant judge the weather at this time of the year ...but for me this is the best time to be on the island...it is really quite beautiful.

some people walk in the rain others just get wet

How right you are elziax! Didn't notice that...

RIP Treehouse! Loved that place! The one on the other side of the island is called Treehouse 2 isn't it? We went round to take a look when I was last there but it was only just starting to take off.

Don't forget the smaller nicer islands near Ko Chang.
travelfish islands

You can fly Bangkok Air to Trat but you don't really save much time since the bus ride from Ekami is only 5.5 hrs. By the time you taxi to the airport, check in and wait for the plane. The new Trat bus station is outside of Trat but sangtaaws are waiting to take you to the docks (3 of them I think) or into Trat.
By the time you get to the port, get a boat and then another sangtaaw to the resort/bungalow you are looking at about 10 hrs.
As Mcmurphy points out, there are busses directly to Laem Ngop (port) from Ekami but only those 2 in the morning. After that all the busses go to Trat bus station. If you want to get the last boat of the day at around 7 or 7:30 pm you need to get a bus by about 12:30 pm. Trat has good places to sleep and eat so don't worry about going down late.

I think you should contact -

Ian on Koh Chang

before you go as it can get pretty wet this time of year.

G'day!

#7, Mclaren: The new Treehouse is just calles Treehouse Lodge as well - or Treehouse Long Beach as that's the name of the stretch of sand it lies on: Beautiful setting, much more space, not so run down - in fact amongst the nicest bungalows I had anywhere in SEA. Many old Treehousers will find it posh, though - I loved it!

...and I absolutely second #9, Ian is a great bloke and very helpful, great, informative website!

Are the prices similar elziax? Do you still get a shack with rock hard beds?

That was one of the charms of the old Treehouse. I can say that now, at the time my opinion of the beds could have been different!
