Article for university

Dear all,

I'm writing a feature article for my Journalism course in uni, and I need some feedback from travellers.

I'd be very grateful if some of you could answer the following questions and either PM the answers to me or post them here (if you don't mind other people seeing the answers):

1) What annoys you most about backpacking?
2) What do you enjoy most about backpacking?
3) Which kind of traveller annoys you most?
4) Which nationality of traveller annoys you most?
5) Anything else you'd like to add (about backpacking)?

All answers will of course be confidential, and rest assured, the article will most likely never be published.

I'm cross-posting this to several branches.

Thanks in advance for any and all replies

that's just as well, because nobody would be interested in reading it if those stupid questions are what it will be based on.

I'll indulge the OP ....

1) Not much
2) Meeting other backpackers (especially female ones)
3) Dreadlocked hippies, and the opposite type : drunken 19 year old lads in places like Ko Pha Ngan
4) None in particular, I like most people I meet on the road (unless they belong to the above categories)
5) No

I must agree with #2, these are overwhelmingly shallow and negative questions. Doesn't sound like you put a lot of thought into them at all.

Unless you are in Pyonyang or Riyadh, perhaps you may consider venturing out into the real world away from the computer and talking to some backpackers?
Maybe later in your course they will cover the topic of 'research'.

5) a backpack is a place to store my t-shirts, not a philosophy

for Thailand at least, the term 'backpacker' is on the endangered list. backpackers in thailand are nothing more than budget tourists all travelling to the exact same places on the very well worn and rutted tourist trail. I 'backpack' because I like backpacks as opposed to suitcases with wheels. And my needs are basic so only one or two stars are required.

When idiots come on plane with backpack on back and turn hitting me, so dumb they not to realize what they do then, they have to stop take off annoy more peoples, try and fit somewhere, sorry but young backpackers are biggest dorks. But they think they cool, duh.

2) What do you enjoy most about backpacking?
Only backpack if off path otherwise wheels very efficient, meeting hot female backpackers.

3) Which kind of traveller annoys you most?
Rude, cheap, disrespectfull and arrogant

4) Which nationality of traveller annoys you most?
I like all nationalities (I even like canadians, shhhh) but the rude, cheap, disrespectful, and arrogant individuals regardless of nationality annoy me.

5) Anything else you'd like to add (about backpacking)?
Please bathe/shower and use deodorant, check-in backpacks.

1) Being bothered by local business people to buy or do something
2) Being free to just go wherever I end up going, no plan, no responsibilities, etc., living cheap, the food, and most of all being out of my country
3) Package tour groups and self important, pretentious travelers
4) Israeli
5) No

After reading your other 4 answers you appear to be one of those self-important pretentious travelers yourself.

#4 Bakka,

I happen to also have a job and have to move house within two weeks - still have to pack. I'd love to go out and talk to backpackers but I simply don't have the time. I just thought I'd get some thoughts from you guys. My major is English, not Journalism - no more course in another week.

I don't want to be responsible for failing your Journalism course. That's my two cents worth

1) Not having enough vacation to enjoy backpacking like I used to as a student
2) Living the moment. Not having a clue where to go next
3) Traveller who don't make an effort to understand foreign languages and expect everybody else to speak English
4) No comment. I try to be unbiased to other nationality
5) When I was younger I had lots of time and no money to travel, now I have "a lot of money" and no time to backpack. When will I ever have both?

1. Packing/unpacking
2. Wandering the earth without position or possession, something I can't really do anymore
3. 200m Chinese package tourists in China on their hols
4. 200m Chinese package tourists in China on their hols
5. Do not travel in China when 200m Chinese package tourists are on their hols (^_^)

> 1) What annoys you most about backpacking?

That the contents become a mess and hard hard to get to, and especially that they mostly don't have wheels.

2) What do you enjoy most about backpacking?

Not having a plan or itinerary.

3) Which kind of traveller annoys you most?

They all annoy me equally. But if I had to highlight one type then it'd be golfers. Honestly, I don't want to hear about your swing! In second place are gay sex tourists. (it's okay if they're just gay, or just sex tourists, but the combination makes me cringe). Third are package tourists.

4) Which nationality of traveller annoys you most?

Trolls. Trolls really annoy me.

5) Anything else you'd like to add (about backpacking)?

No.
