Best way to get Tibet Permit

1.
Could anyone tell me the best way (if any) to get a Tibet Permit set up before entering China? Others have suggested contacting Sim's Cozy Guesthouse but as of right now they told me they are unable to set me up with the permit.

2.
Does anyone know of a place in Beijing, Xi'an or Chengdu that has been able to get the Tibet Permit for travellers as of late? My friend and I are hoping to take the Chengdu-Lhasa train in late July and we will be in Beijing and Xi'an before arriving in Chengdu.

Thank you so much in advance for any advice you can offer. Save travels.

Regards,
Ubistano

I got mine through Holly's hostel which is associated with Sam's backpackers. I think most places will facilitate this for you. the permit is purchased along with your ticket. There is a degree of uncertainty about TTB's and travel in Tibet at the moment as the government has tightened control in the wake of recent protests in Tibet. I suggest you do a search on this board.

They could really use a temporary sticky on this one imo.

We recently bought both permits and train tickets through Helen at windhorsetour.com in Chengdu. Her phone number is 28 - 85593923. Good luck!

#2, How recently was that? Helen told us they don't sell train tickets to lhasa at the moment, and that was just a few days ago...
