Arriving Chiang Mai Tuesday

Hi , Can anyone recommend a great (quiet and clean) guest house in Chiang Mai ...maybe with pool but doesn't matter and what was the name of that really good elephant conservation park ?..run by a woman I think..not the touristy elephant rides. Cheers

Look at Travelfish guide.

A pool really matters to me more than quiet which is much harder to find than the pool. The Top North Hotel is a great bargain for a nice pool, clean bright air-con rooms with nice bath for only 650 baht. I was less fond of the neighborhood dogs in the small streets behind who bark till the roosters take over in the middle of the night. Well before dawn.
I have heart the chickens in the most peaceful remote places in the country from small villages near Laos to Ko Maak. YOU NEED EARPLUGS in Thailand.

The Royal GH has a pool. And no noise problems. Aside from that I wouldn't call it 'great' - but it's down the small lane off Moon Muang, past Loi Kroh, just after petrol station.

Don't go to Top North hotel..the rooms are dirty, smell like cigarette smoke, mouldy bathrooms, etc. Chiang Mai Thai House (www.chiangmaithaihouse.com) is less than 2 years old, very clean, thai/modern style, great restaurant, internet, POOL, tours, etc

i lived in top-north hotel when i was in chiang mai that was about 2 weeks ago....hoestly that was a nice place...clean,few people with a nice pool....2 beds with air conditioner is 1000baht i should say that was a little expensive to us....anyway the most important thing is the hotel is near the city gate and you can walk to most places if you want..or rent a motorbike would be a great idea too....

i'm from one of the oldet cities in china which is famous by The Terracotta Army in Qin dynasty.i like travel and communicate with people and know more about different culture.

Discrepency in opinion? I think not. 3 is probably thinking of the Top North GUESTHOUSE which I also found filthy.
As for prices, either they went up since my 650 baht stay or chrisjay stayed in one of the more expensive rooms. When I was there they had aircon double rooms for 650, 900 and 1000 for the biggest.

What ever you do. Don't go to awana house. Two years ago it was clean. But now, its pretty dirty. And their pool, is better discribed as a fish tank. 3 mtrs bij 4 mtrs Besides there are strange flakes drifting in the pool.
The service has also gone bad.

I can tell about Awana House - I've stayed there for several occasions - it is a very convenient and fare priced guesthouse, nicely located in the old city near the Taphae Gate, very clean and the staff is friendly and service mided.

When I'm reading the last posting of Spiderlady about the Awana house I really doubt if she is really serious about what she wrote. And if she has ever been there.

The description of the pool is spot-on.

By the way when I'm reading the last posting of Thailandganger I really doubt if he has really 'stayed there for several occasions'. Most likely he is there right now and most likely punters would be better off avoiding him and avoiding Awana House.

I'm sorry I'm offending someone. That's certainly not my intention.
Currently I'm not in Awana, but I was recently. And my personal experience there it still is clean, convenient as it always has been. And that's why I don't understand the posting of Spiderlady. It is all up to the people to decide at what accomodation they want to stay. And if someone asks me where to stay in Chiang Mai: I recommend Awana House.

Again: I'm sorry if I did offend someone.

And that's why I don't understand the posting of Spiderlady.

What's not to understand? Shes states issues with: 1) Pool 2) General upkeep 3) Service

Spiderlady has clearly been around and has a significant number of posts behind her. What about you? She even displays an email address in her profile so if it really comes down to it you can contact her rather than resort to this plaintive griping.

As noted I can concur with the description of the pool. Regarding general upkeep I can give places a lot of leeway so I won't comment. Re service I can see issues, possibly stemming from a general lack of respect, possibly stemming from you-know-where.

As I said, I'm sorry. My tone was not right and I really regret I posted it. Believe me. I probably was in a wrong mood or bad karma or so and I wish I could turn back time.
And yes, the pool at Awana is small, but it was clean when I stayed there in July. The same counts for the rooms. And the friendly staff was keen on keeping it that way. That's my experience and hopefully you accept this when I write it down this way.
