flying into/out of shenzhen v. flying into/out of hong kong

hi friends,
i'm planning a trip to china and hong kong for july and august, and i read in the lonely planet guidebook that internal flights from beijing to hong kong and hong kong to chengdu are a lot more expensive than those from beijing to shenzhen and shenzhen to chengdu. my budget is small so i'd like to save money, but i'll also be traveling alone with not a lot of time and no knowledge of chinese. would it make sense for me to book my flights through shenzhen, rather than hong kong (where i'll be staying with a friend) to save money? or should i stick with hong kong to save the hassle?

also, does anyone know of a good place to find cheap air tickets? i'd like to buy them at least a few weeks before my trip starts, so i can be sure i'll have a way home!

thanks!

it's not THAT big a hassle. THere's a direct ferry from Kowloon, Hong Kong to the Shenzhen airport.

The savings can be immense. Just to give you an example for me to fly Shanghai-Shenzhen round trip two weeks ago, it was 1600 RMB. The same dates flying into and out of Hong Kong were 3100. Add in the added hassle (for me) of getting to Pudong - it was an easy decision. Although, the price difference is not always so extreme. I've seen tickets as cheap as 2000 Shanghai-Hong Kong. At 2000, I would've flown direct.

ZUji.com.hk is a good site for checking prices out of HK into China.

yoee.com, ctrip or e-long are good sites for checking China internal flight prices.

Definitely fly to Shenzhen, as #1 mentioned, it can save you a lot of $$.

In addition to the ferry, there is also a direct highway bus service between Shenzhen airport and Kowloon.

tickets for the direct bus can be purchased at the CTS in Mongkok. Just go to the Bank Centre exit of the Mongkok MTR station (I believe it's E, but I'm not 100% sure) walk straight out of the exit, down that street until you get to an outdoor football stadium/basketball courts. You'll see the CTS there.

I, however, highly recommend the ferry if the timing works out with your flight. It's slightly faster (1.5 hours, as opposed to 2) but more importantly, isn't subject to the vagaries of traffic AND you don't have to get on and off twice like you do with the bus to cross the border.

Ferry tickets are available at the north end of Canton Road in Tsimshatsui at Kowloon Hong Kong City China Ferry Terminal, second floor. It's slightly more expensive (I think like 180 HKD vs. 90 for the bus) but it's well worth the extra cost.

If you're trying to save some money, then take the KCRC to Luohu then the airport bus from the adjoining bus station: won't cost more than HK$60 total. The KCRC, as well as the airport bus from Luohu, have very frequent service, much much more frequent than the ferry or the airport bus service from Kowloon. Note, though, that the border crossing at Luohu can be slow on weekends and holidays.

Note that flights out of HKG are not classed as "domestic flights" in China. It is much cheaper to fly from Shenzhen or even Guangzhou.

Yes, Guangzhou can be even cheaper than Shenzhen, so if you're in no hurry, that can be the way to go.
