I have been telling people for a long time that Golmud and Xining are the best places to change a group visa into a standard Chinese visa (though in the past not everyone has been able to change their visa so easily in Xining. I have been hearing many more success stories lately though).

latest report: we got another 10 days now in Urumqi's PSB and that'll be enough to exit to Kyrgyzsatn. in the PSB in Urumqi there's a really nice english speaker called Sua (or something like that) that helped us alot to get the not-allowed 3rd extension. if u want to extend your visa here - make sure to write down an authorized tourist hotel (ours wasn't).6
