Mongolia in January

Hi Travellers,

My sister and I are planning a journey from Beijing back to London on train via Mongolia. We want to spend a week to 10 days in Mongolia (not as much time as we'd ideally like)...however our question is this:
- Although its going to be really cold, how easy will it be for us to travel outside of UlanBataar? We'd like to get as rural as possible...but are certain there maybe constraints with time and weather...
- What advice is there on hoping off the train from Beijing at UB, and then getting train again a week later? Is this do-able??!

Thanks...all advice hugely appreciated
Sarah

Plenty of time to spend a few days in UB and a few more somewhere like Terelj or Hustai National Park - both have ger camps which stay open through the winter. Countryside looks even better in the snow, and horse-riding keeps you warm enough at -20C.

Temps along the TransMong route but temperatures outside of UB will be different.

No, you cannot buy a ticket for the train from Moscow to Beijing, hop off in UB and reboard a week later.

Yes, you can get to rural areas.

Since I have taken the time to answer your question, it would be nice if you took the time to respond as to whether the information was helpful.

It's no problem to go to the countryside when you bring enough warm clothes with you, it can be a chilly -30 at day outside of UB.
I'm living in Jarmag and usually we are 5 degrees lower than UB ( January this year -28 at daytime).
You have to buy a new ticket.
