Books

Hi everybody,

I will work in China during 1 year. What books shouldn t I bring with me? For instance, I read on Wikitravel China that the Lonely Planet China could be forbidden and/or confiscated, is it true? What about religious books, i.e the Bible, some traditional buddhist texts or The Teachings of Buddha (BDK)? I am interested to get your personal experiences :) Many thanks.

Listen carefully to my speech, and let this be your consolation.

You can bring books into China if they are for your personal use. Books in Chinese will raise more questions than books in English.

You will have no problems if you bring only one copy of each book. Anything in English is unlikely to cause problems.

Bibles are easily available (in English and Chinese) in major cities in China. You can also get Buddhist stuff too although obviously that tends mostly to be in Chinese.

as far as the LP guide goes, plant in down inside your bag, or ake the cover off.

Other books, no problem. The Chinese don't care what your religion is, as long as you don't preach it too long and too loud. There are many Christian missionaries sin China. They are a pain, but what are going to do, hey?

There are Christian churches in Beijing.

the bible can be bought at all three of the major book shops in Beijing.

Buddha texts are fine and readily available in shops (usually next to the little red book. ;-) The temples will welcome you.

HOWEVER. books that appear to the Chinese to be critical of China (and remember that there is NO SUCH THING as constructive criticism in China) will, if found, be confiscated.

I agree with #2, 3, and 4 (most of 4's anyway)

The one thing I would add is you can get away with Chinese copies of those books as long as you say (and being honest of course) that you would like to learn a little Chinese and that is way for you to learn. I would also recommend packing all your books at the bottom of your bag except the one you read on the plane.

And honestly don't gamble with political books or other ones that don't have a good "perspective" on China.

What books do you have listed that you want to bring and what are you going to do with them?

the only problem I've heard of with the LP guide to China is when crossing from Laos or Vietnam into Yunnan province. But I took an LP across that border with no worries.

their objection in this case is that the map doesn't show Taiwan as part of China. So if you scratch out Taiwan in the map on the back, and remove the map pages at the front (hide them, sellotape them back in later) you'll be fine. and if you're not entering the country from Vietnam or Laos, then don't even bother doing that...
