Is booking in August necessary?

My b/f and I will be travelling to Thailand for a month in August. We don't really have much of an itinerary apart from loosely planning to spend most of our time on islands on the southern gulf. I have read from previous threads that it is a good idea to book your first few nights when arriving at BKK, which we will definitely do, but would really appreciate some advice on whether it is necessary to book on the islands?! Obviously, it would be easier for us not to have to book ahead but at the same time we don't want to get into a situation where there are no decent bungelows available!

Thanks for any help you may be able to give!

It may make your life a bit easier to book in advance, but you will end up paying more.... and some of the nicer places don't have online booking anyway.

Mandy, I never book in high season, so I reckon you will be okay.
Don't be afraid to use touts on ferries or at piers. They usually have a picture book of their place, are open to bargaining and can usually lay on free transport to the accomm, which can be a plus on some of the bigger islands. I have got some great placws from these people.

Good advice, Tezza. On the islands and on the ferry docks like Ranong, that "tout" with a picture book might even be the owner of a small resort. I also have never booked in advance. The worst that can happen is you get a bad or overpriced place for one night and you have to look for another one the next day.

When i went last year in August it was completely booked out in Koh Samui, in particular Chaweng. But when we got to Phuket, we had a variety of different choices. I would book in advance to avoid disappointment, because you might generally get ripped off otherwise.

Maysta has a good point - it is low season everywhere in August except for Samui and neighbouring areas, which have a different weather pattern. So they can get crowded.
