Airport from which end of the BTS?

Trying to find a cheap, relatively traffic-free route to the airport from where I am in Sathorn (Sunday mid-morning). My nearest BTS station is Surasak, and I was thinking of getting the BTS to Victory and taking the 552 to the airport. How long would that take?

Thanks,
Sze

Sorry I meant 551. Or does it make more sense for me to go to On Nut and get the 552 from there? Is that the closest BTS station to the airport?

Thanks sleepless. Do you know how long it would take from On Nut to the airport by bus vs. by cab? How often do the buses run?

just get a taxi. Every time you arrive in a big city like Bangkok, you should be meaning business. That means kill everybody. The bus is for losers.

SiB is on the nut. on nut is definitely what you want. the duration of the journy depends on what time you're going.

callippo has a point also. take a taxi from on nut. i've done the journey numerous times but only late at night. it takes about 35-45 minutes with very little traffic and has never cost more than 150THB (that's dirt cheap by most folks' stanards). currently, there's a lot of construction along that area of sukk. a good cabbie will know an better route, but they're not all so bright. durring the day, this could take almost....hmmmm...don't even want to think about it.

but if you must do the bus, more power to ya.

Thanks wayne. I'm leaving in about 2 hours, traffic on a Sunday morning shouldn't be so bad, should it?

I'm wondering now if I should get a cab from my apartment in Sathorn (across the river from Thaksin bridge), which would basically be 100 baht more than BTS + taxi, sounds like. Ideally I want take the 552 but not if traffic is bad!

For the benefit of anyone in the KHAOSAN ROAD area folk the bus to the airport is number 556, it only goes to the airport and its once per hour. It picks up within 1000meters of Kaosan. When you get to the airport bus terminal jump on the FREE shuttle that takes you to the airport terminal door
The bus cost is 35baht
Private airport shuttle bus is 150baht
Taxi - if you dont haggle can be as high as 1200baht

The buses are absolutely not for "losers". They are airconditioned, in great conndition, and the staff are friendly. Some times when the traffic is bad I see the 150baht bus just ahead all the way.

Hope that this helps.

A meter taxi mid morning on a Sunday should cost 250 to 300 baht max - no 50 baht airport tax going there. Traffic should not be too heavy at that time. You get delivered right into the airport departures. Without doubt the most convenient way and compared to most countries very cheap. If the driver won't use the meter get another one.

I am not a fan of lugging my bags around and climbing long stairs to skytrain but at peak hours it might make sense to go to On Nut and then taxi to the airport.

If I managed to catch the 35 baht bus and get there in one piece I would feel triumphant and probably have had a good time. The trouble with buses in foreign parts is knowing when to get off.

The Airport Express bus is a bit of a rip off at 150 baht. Its the price of a taxi for 2.

Roll on the High Speed train link!

Thanks for all your responses.

I've just come back from the airport, so here's my report: took the BTS to On Nut, and waited 10 mins for bus 552 which was pain-free to the airport (via the transport centre where you get the shuttle bus). I don't know if it comes more regularly than once an hour - guess I was lucky. All told, from Surasak BTS to the airport, it took 1 1/2 hours and cost under 100 baht.

Taxi from the airport to Sathorn was 400 baht (the taxi driver tried to charge me 450 but I did the calculations with him and he said oh yeah sorry :P). This included the 50 baht surcharge, tolls, and a bit of a traffic jam crossing Thaksin bridge.

But I'd second wowpow's suggestion to skytrain it to On Nut on heavy traffic days. I reckon even from On Nut it would be a slow trek to the airport, much less from anywhere nearer downtown.

The route via Victory Monument is actually MUCH faster when the traffic is heavy. That puts you on the motorway directly to the terminal. On Nut is physically closer, but traffic is awful around there.
