little help- from experienced thailand travellers

hey,
ive been to thailand, laos, vietnam, cambodia etc a few times and have done all the major highlights and developed a, i feel, pretty good sense of it all. Im returning with some first time travellers this summer and am looking for something new to try for myself whilst still being able to take these guys to some of the main things on any thai checklist. ie phi phi, koh tao. Im kinda bored with koh pangyang and will only be there for two days (full moon) and am then going to koh tao for a few days. Has anyone got anything spectacular that i may have missed on my travels. It can be anything from any country in the region. I really want to bring some excitement into it for me again!

well, there's the whole rest of the country besides the backpacker island checklist.

Take a train/cheap flightup to Chiang Mai.

Hire a vehicle and drive the Mae Hong Son loop via Mai Sariang, Mae Hong Son, Soppong, Pai, maybe Chiang Dao and back to Chaing Mai. Give yourself a week although 5 days is doable. You won't regret it and that little bit of freedom makes it all the more worthwhile. You even get the backpacker thing of Pai to make you realise that you are far better off, not better, being able to find places and people as you come across them rather than because everyone else goes there.

It's an easy trip and the scenery is spectacular

You hung out with loser backpackers on Tao, Phi Phi and Pha Ngan, so it's no wonder you are bored.

Hire a car and drive around the countryside.

Instead of designing yourself to fit the world, you can design a life to fit your abundant gifts

Travel light - 10kgs or less. Get on red buses at random. Get off when they stop. Talk to locals. Stay with them. Make Thai friends. Avoid tourist areas. Sleep rough. Smile a lot.

Avoid places mentioned in travel guides!

What about spending some time in Northeastern Thailand?
Traveling in Isaan can be quite interesting. And be sure you will see and learn more about Thailand in one week than you have on all your trips before.

Sure, there is a problem: the language. But many foreigners have opened guest houses, resorts and restaurants here, and they will be glad to help you. (BTW staying at hotels is mostly cheaper than at the foreign "owned" places, if you are on a low-budged trip)
