If you can fly to Chengdu there are quite a few travel agencies there who can arrange for you to 'join' a group, only officially. In Lhasa you can carry on with your own plans. It certainly won't be $500 or anywhere near that! The Traffic Hotel is a good place to stay and there is a travel agency within the hotel.Judy

Much cheaper if you organize your excursions in Lhasa itself. #2 and #4 are on the mark here. There has been a lot of talk on these boards about tighter restrictions on Tibet travel in recent times. If you get to Lhasa you can check out the bulletin boards at some of the hotels (e.g. Yak Hotel or Kirey Hotel) you may be able to link up with others trying to form a group for excursions.http://thewanderingant.com/travels/betel-nut.html
