Chengdu _Tibet

My friend and I have just taken the train from Chengdu to Tibet and thought we would post some info that you my find helpful. Sim's guesthouse is by far the most friendly and helpful guesthouse in Chengdu (we stayed at a couple), at our time of stay he was unable to issue just tibet permits without a tour but was still incredibly helpful. We got our permit from Dave's Hostel it was 380yuan and was hassle free, it took three days and we were on our way.

We also met a guy called Pep that works for PepTours/VisitTibet (www.peptours.com, www.visittibet.com). Although we didnt want to go by tours, the photos of their trip looked incredible and Pep is a really sound guy, they were one of the only tour agencies to be completely uneffected by the strikes due to good government relations.

Richard,

How was the train? I haven't seen a lot of reviews on the experience and was considering taking the train from Chengdu as well.

Well... the train was probably the most beautiful thing I have ever experienced, we did the trans siberian last summer and it cannot be compared!!! We are in Lhasa at the moment and i just can't describe its wonder. I love this place so much!! We arrived yesterday at 5.45 so left... 45 hours before it. Daves sort the permit out three day before that. I wish i could put you all directly in contact with Dave but it is on 'Renmin Stree' i think, quite a big place, should be on the lonely planet. He's really helpful
