Saturday night. Home alone.

Tell me something nice about your town or city. A picture link would be nice too.

Oh, I always love these posts.

I live in Utrecht. The 3rd city of Holland, right in the centre of the country. It's a very old city, there are remains of the romans underneath it. The center of Utrecht can is between de Oudegracht (old canal) and it's a web of small streets with cobble (sp) stones that lead you from one little square or canal to another.

Utrechts most famous building is the Dom tower wich is seperated from the Dom church due to a tornado in the late 1500's.

Utrecht gave birth to one of the most famous and adorable childrens cartoons: Nijntje (Miffy in English)

The city is one of the most popular student cities in Holland and is therefor full with great restaurants and pubs, but the overpopulation also results in housing prices going through the roof.

It's 7pm and insects are singing outside. The bats are not far away. For the picture, none of them are posted on the net but I can send them by mail if you want.

Warwick
Warwick Castle
Leamington - the building on the right (behind queen victoria) is where I worked last week scanning votes for the election.

They are both nice places (both right next to each other), not the most exciting in the world though...

madrid. a hard city to summarise, as it doesnt really have a focal point. but its got a special atmosphere. for me, this place is special - its a converted church, which is now a beautiful library where the students study. on the roof is a beautiful cafe, lovely views of the roofs of madrid while you have a coffee...

The best restaurant in my town has only one type of pizza on its menu. It has two bookshops which would rather sell stationery, four temples (each one claims to fulfill your fondest wish), seven hills (Elysium, Inverarm, Jakhoo, Bantony, Prospect Hill, Summer Hill & Observatory Hill), 103 railway tunnels leading up to it and the friendliest populace ever.

I live on the outskirts of Buffalo, NY...but in a little village called Williamsville. But today we have hockey playoffs between Buffalo and Ottawa.

Buffalo is cold in the winter but very lovely in the spring and summertime. Lots of festivals and one of the biggest county fairs in the country. (Erie County Fair)

currently in london. Well we've all heard tales of the place if we haven't visited it, but i can honestly say that until i lived here i'd never appreciated it. Being a tourist here i've concluded must be horrid. So hard to discover the wonderful stuff in a few days.

Wonderful stuff like these huts from the old London Bridge that are in the park near my house.

The odd australian memorials you happen across. Like this one in St Mary le Bow's (yes the church in the nursery rhyme). This church also has one of the nicest crosses above the altar. its really unusual, sorry i can't find a picture of it.

ooo i forgot. The confusion of all the motorists a couple of weeks ago at 5.30am on ANZAC Day at hyde park corner when they were held up for our 2 minutes silence in commeration of those that have died in wars. Hyde park corners where the aussie/kiwi war memorial is.

Its always fascinating going to memorials in foreign countries.

I live in London. I live in North East London. Famous for Murder Mile (if you read the right-wing Evening Standard) and the place that Blair once lived. We have the lovely Columbia Road flower market on Sundays, which I just love browsing and walking through. We also have the most beautiful and awe-inspiring Hackney Empire theatre - you'll need to scroll down for the photo of it. It's an old music hall and I cannot help but fall in love every time I go and see a show there. We also have some fantastic parks.

We also have some nice (shut) old victorian swimming pools (Haggerston), a canal, some awful suicide towers and some thieving scum living in them (stil sore about being robbed twice this year).

oh yeah some are open. there's also ironmonger row, and york hall.

Suicide towers. what i call some of the grimmer highrise council housing. comes from previously living across the road from this in sydney.

Realise they're not really that bad, and some of the original council housing is amazing. I used to live in an ex-council flat that was stunning (and heritage listed). The 60's developments however can't really be called 'stunning' can they?

this is how we are located
few facts:
Rembrandt was born here
It is a real university city and has one of the oldest universities (founded in 1575)
The city was the home of many of the Pilgrims for about 10 years before they embarked (1620) for America
The city has a 10th-century fortress; two old churches, the Pieterskerk (14th cent.) and the Hooglandsche Kerk (15th cent.); several museums; and many 17th-century houses.

I live in San Diego (see Avalon's posting for the general pics!). I know I'm supposed to say something nice about it, but I think it is over-rated.

I used to live in Buffalo Anitarose!! I didn't know there were Buffalo-ish posters on here! I wish I was going to the game tonight- I used to go to a lot of games because I lived in Allentown- right down the street from the Arena, and the nosebleeds were pretty cheap ($15)!

This thread is making me want to move.

Perth has beautiful beaches which often display breathtaking sunsets over the Indian Ocean, it also has a fabulous cafe culture and great local wineries and breweries.

I live in Wollondilly Shire in New South Wales. We're at the gateway to the Southern Highlands. All of the towns here are small country towns set amongst rolling hills. Sydney's a fair way off, but people do commute to the city regularly. This is practically in my back yard. So is this.

I live in Mumbai, India!

This is the view from my office

I am sitting looking out there right now.. big monsoon clouds are building up (one month to go) and casting shadows on the ocean. the winds are whipping up the orange and yellow flags of the fishing boats.

I wish I was outside in the heat instead of inside in aircon.

my hometown: Calgary, Canada.. The building in front is the Saddledome (shaped like a saddle), it's the ice hockey arena. In the background you can see the Calgary Tower, which has a glass-floor observation deck and a rotating restuarant at the top. The tower was the shape of the torch for the 1988 Winter Olympics, and lights on fire for special events.

Calgary is the gateway to the Rocky Mountains, which has great skiing, camping, rafting, hiking trails etc.

The city is also host to the Calgary Stampede, a HUGE 10 day summer festival that takes over the whole city. People dress like cowboys and have huge parties....there are free pancake breakfasts all over the city, and tons of events. Rodeo, midway, casino, concerts, fireworks....tons of chaos, and fun!

Strangelove, you may be right about Madrid not having a focal point, but the Puerta de Alcalá is the traditional spot that you have to visit when you come back to town, and the Puerta del Sol looks pretty much like the center to me.

Here in Washington, D.C., there is a lot to hate (the present government, for example), but everybody likes the Smithsonian Museums, especially the Air and Space Museum. And Union Station? "Why are we going to a train station?" asked somebody on the Metro. Well, because it's not like any other train station anywhere. Not only is it a gorgeous Beaux Arts structure, it has shops and restaurants and movies.

I don't have pictures, but I'm sure they are readily available on the web.
