Great Wall

Hi,
does anyone know if it is possible to do a one day trip to see the Great Wall from Shanghai (or possibly to stay overnight). I am going to Shanghai on the business trip and I would love to use this opportunity to visit the Great Wall. Any advise on the best option to get there as well.
Many thanks!!

You do know that the Great Wall is nowhere near Shanghai right?

Youre gonna have to go to Beijing to be able to climb the wall (BJ is a ~2 hour flight away from SH).

from Beijing city its a 1-2 hour drive out to the Wall, depending on traffic and where you want to see it.

Realistically, youre gonna need at least 6 hours unless you rush it: 2 hours going there, 2 hours at the Wall, 2 hours going back.

to make it a day trip is pretty exhausting

1.5 hours to the airport
2 hour flight
1.5 hours from airport to wall - but that's only if you know how to tell a cab driver how to get there
2 hours at the wall
1.5 hours back to the airport
1.5 hour wait at the airport
2 hour flight back
1.5 hour wait at the hongqiao taxi line

that's pretty exhausting.

you know what? this is just silly. I mean you're all the way in Beijing - and you're going to skip Tian'anmen Square, the Summer Palace, the Temple of Heaven, the hutongs etc. etc. just to go to the wall?

Really?

Bets option: Hire a helicopter.

From hotel rooftop about 5 hours plus to the car park near the Great Wall.
Have a walk. Take a photo or two while the helicopter get fuel from nearby airstrip.
Back to the helicopter, slow five hours back to Shanghai.

Here is the actual way to do it if you truly only want to come to Beijing to do the Great Wall within a day.

1. Take an early flight from Shanghai
2. Go to taxi stand and negotiate a deal to take you to MU TIAN YU Great Wall for a total of 5 hours max - you should be able to get it for 400 RMB (100 km round trip back to airport).
3. Catch a late afternoon flight out

Mu Tian Yu is the closest wall from the airport and a pretty good one for the first time visitor. It will take a little over 1 hour to get there, and 2 and half hours is plenty to be on the wall.

There are two other established Great Wall for tourist - Ba Da Ling - about the same distance but way too crowded. Shi Ma Tai - a bit too far, about 200 km round trip from the airport.

#6's suggestion would work but it would be a pretty exhausting day. If you are able to overnight in Beijing (which you seem to suggest in your OP) then I would definitely do that. If that is the case tell us how it would work (eg leave Shanghai one morning need to be back the following evening or what).

And if money isn't a concern and you really want to see the Wall then ignore all of the above negative comments. Sure its a bit of a crazy idea - but nothing wrong with doing crazy things if you can afford it!

I've accompanied another traveller on a trip like this. Doable, definitely. We flew on Saturday night and back on Sunday night. Let me know if you need more details/help.
Cheers!
