Visa Requirements for US Citizens - Conflicting Info

I've searched LP, gone to the US Dept of State's visa information and the Mongolian Embassy's web site for their US location. The embassy says US citizens DO need a visa. The US DOT says US citizens DO NOT. Both appear to be updated, but obviously someone's confused (probably just me). I'd appreciate the real word from someone that has recently gone to Mongolia or knows the real answer.

If a visa is required, what is best way to get the visa? We're in China right now and will be for the next month. The largest cities we will pass through are Beijing, Xi'an and Guangzhou. We're working our way towards Beijing and the Trans-Mongolian.

We sincerely appreciate any help.

Hi there
In Februray we (a Swiss couple) were at the Mongolian Embassy where a US/Irish couple wanted to obtain the visa. The guy (the US-Passportholder) did not get a visa, as he does not need one.... Well, that was three months ago. Anyhow, the Mongolian Embassy is not that far away from the trainstation, i.e. it is located in a "embassy-neighbourhood".
The only question that occurs to me is: Where do you plan to go after Mongolia?
Chears from Switzerland (unfortunately our trip is over ;-)

US passport holders do not need a visa for entry to Mongolia unless you plan to stay for more than 90 days.

The information below is copied from the website of the Mongolian embassy in Washington, DC . Perhaps you misread something.

Visa information for US citizen only

Holders of US passport, who travel to Mongolia for official, private business and tourism for up to 90 days are exempted from visa requirements in accordance with the New Visa Policy, which is effective since July 18, 2001 .

US citizens need a visa to travel to Mongolia more than 90 days. For staying in Mongolia for more than 90 days, or obtaining multiple entry visas for work / study, it is required to have an Approval from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mongolia. You can have an Approval with assistance of your partners or supporters there in Mongolia . Visa fee is $100.

Normally visa is processed in 2 working days. However, please be advised that the regulations require up to one week for the processing. The same day service (8 work hours for handling) is available for additional fee of US $100.

I'm sitting here in Mongolia right now, Im an american, and you don't need a visa. Just a suggestion, when you get to UB ask for LG Guesthouse. They are great people to stay with.

Thanks, everyone. That's great news. We appreciate everyone's advice. jclibby - we'll check out the LG Guesthouse; cheers for the suggestion.

Afterwards, we're headed to Russia (we think!) as we follow the Trans-Siberian from Beijing to Moscow. Now if only we'd started earlier on that visa...:)

US citizens need none visa because Mr. Bush has blackmailed the Mongolian government with his signature to the contracts of the development aid.

In contrast former mongolian citizens need a visa.

#6:Can you backup your claim with some more facts? How the signing of an aid package directly resulted removal of visa requirements from Mongolia government to US citizen? I am curious.

Mongolia needs a powerful friend due to understandale reasons; it choosed the USA. Same as Poland, the Poles significantly strengthed their military relationship with the USA on the very eve of joining EU. It is political decision, little to do with anything else. Frankly, the idea of any government, USA or not, would ask a foreign government for a free pass for its citizen in visa requirement is preposterous; such things, if ever happened, do no one no good.

Bush delayed his signature until Mongolia entered the „partnership of freedom“ and accepted all the preferences for visa requirements.
Info is from one of the highest staff members of of the government.

How many countries get free visa requirements (up to 90 days!) from Mongolia?!

Former Mongolians having family in Mongolia don´t get a free visa requirement up to 30 days!
You didn´t give an answer.

Because I don´t like to lead a political diskussion, I will not post here further.

Cheers,

haribo,
the deal was this: us citizens can travel without a visa and Mongolians can (possibly) get 10 year multiple entry visas to the US. I know a lot of mongolians that have received the ten year visa, and they are not complaining!

#7: Thanks for the clarification. What I tried to say is that visa policies for any contry is always based on immigration situation and political relationship. I would strongly doubt that any goverment would try to press other countries for a free pass to its citizens traveling needs, especially when such needs are non-goverment based.

I know there're lots of posts on this and I could spend a couple of hours checking, but while we're on the visa topic I'd like to know if it's possible to get a Mongolian visa any place in China other than Beijing - a place I'd prefer to avoid. How about at the only land border crossing - Erenhot (?) Secondly, having either Canadian and British passports, and my partner being German, what will it cost and how long will it take?
Finally, the ultimate non-starter question: what are the chances of a vegetarian dying of starvation on the steppes? I know, stupid question. After all Gengis Khan didn't exactly rise to fame on tofu burgers! I should know better than ask were it not for the possibly interesting replies it might engender.

It can be obtained in Erenhot (Erlian) or in Hohhot but I think that getting it same day is expensive and border towns aren't great places to spend time.

O.K., I will try the last time.
I think there is a misunderstanding, perhaps of my english.
As I wrote that former Mongolian citizens (In reason of a marriage in another country, perhaps they changed their citizen.) don´t get a free visa requirement, I didn´t mean visa requirement for such people for USA but for MONGOLIA! Free 90 days visa for US citizen but no free visa (also not 30 days) for people having place of birth and family in Mongolia!

#10: You spoke of a visa deal. You write also, the Mongolians can get a US visa (POSSIBLY). Wherefrom do you have your info? Also from the highest-ranked Mongolian government staff who had been concerned at that time? Why do you think, that Mongolia send also troops to the Iraq?

#11: Do you really think that policy will done in front of the eyes of the public?
