Tibetan prices...

I am fluent in Chinese and will be traveling with one other person. I want to travel in Tibet with as much adventure as possible. However I am on a tight budget-- no money to rent jeep to go off road, no money to fly, no money to hire a personal tour guide, etc. It seems that the only possiblity there is for me to is to be apart of a tour group since independent traveling is more expensive.

should I just book a tour then?
how much did you guys spend in Tibet?

That's great, but you are going to Tibet.

Quote: "with as much adventure as possible".

Booking a tour won't give you a bit of adventure. Adventure isn't adventure if you already have a plan.

Prepare the bare minimum, get there and just start walking and talking to people. Smile and be open.
Things always fall into place at the right time if you are ready.
There's always a way to get around for cheap, especially in Tibet.

OF COURSE your Chinese will help you! It's a very strong card.

Losanq,

I find it very sad that you would take the time to 'reply' to this topic, just to be a bitch.
When did you last go to Tibet speaking Chinese? Tibet may be a separate country but I can't imagine that Chinese would be anything but helpful in many situations.

Maybetomorrow333, you haven't told us how much time you have, from what you said, it seems that your best bet is to invest a bicycle and cycle through the area. I'm not kidding.

Cycling this route, you got enough adventures and you don't need a guide, we did it last year, it took us about two months from Lijiang, Yunnan to Lhasa. If you also have a tent, you can control your budget down to as little as Y20 to Y30 a day (well... basically there're not too many places to spend your money if you want!), and you can also save a lot of money on the entrance fees because monks or those sheriff usually won't charge cyclists anything, explain to them in Chinese that you cycled from a distant place, show them some of your photos, it helps a lot.
