Nepal to China via Tibet

My boyfriend and I are want to get to Shanghai overland, and have been looking into the possibilities via Tibet. I believe that it is necessary to organise a 'tour' with a group, and from Lhasa, we will get the new train into Chengdou.
We don't mind going fairl swiftly through Tibet, only because funds are severl running out. I have found a week long tour in the LP for $400 each, which is really expensive, and probably out of our budget.
Does anyone know of a cheaper and/or quicker tour just to get us through the 'forbidden' region? We are in Nepal as from tomorrow- any recommended agencies to chat to there?
