Beijing and Shanghai in December?

Just wondering if anyone here has braved the cold out in either Beijing or Shanghai.. Was contemplating shortening a Thailand trip this december so that I could get up to mid/northern China. Any advice or pointers would be greatly appreciated...

Thanks!!

In Beijing, December is the worst time of year. Temps below zero, with icy winds, and a chance of the first snows. It's the winds that always get me. Even January is not as bad, when the weather seems to settle into a pattern of cold and snow, but less wind.

Cheers, Paul.

Unless youre a complete wimp you wont have any problems coping. Yes, its cold but the dry and sunny winter days in BJ can be beautiful and there are plenty of them. Plus its low season for tourism so you'll have many places to yourself (well, almost).

See you are drom Canada. You wont have any problems. Just take usual cold weather gear and you will be okay.

Virtually all buildings/enclosed tourist attractions/transport options are heated.

If there is no food, isn't that food for thought?

We were in China for 6 weeks in Dec/Jan,our first stop being Beijing, well we actually weren't quite prepared for the cold. Our Aussie thermals didn't do a thing so ended up buying some new ones in Beijing. It was more than freezing. That aside,Beijing was lovely,no pollution, clear blue skies. We flew out from Shanghai and the temp was much nicer. We actually met up a few times with a Canadian couple,Lynn actually didn't enjoy the cold at all, said it was much different to Quebec.

Hey there - I 'lived' in Shanghai for most of the winter last year, and whilst there were a few 'omigod its freezing' days, overall it was bearable (but i am from reasonably warm aussie). I was in Beijing for a week in February (sorry, dont know about December) and it was the coldest I've ever been (but inside buildings etc more than bearable. That said, if you have the chance, take it, Beijing is a great city.

Beijing at night in December is -17° C. During the day it is about -6° C. Just keep the north-face on and you will be right. The wind can be a bit icy.

Shanghai is damp, grey and dreary but still not too bad a time to visit anyway.
Cheers!
