tourist visa to Z visa?

hi, i am moving to China for work and booked my tickets already, though my company couldn't get me a Z visa in time. Is it possible to travel on a tourist visa and get it changed to a Z visa in China? Would it be possible to do this in Hong Kong? Can a Z visa application be expediated?

As you will already be in China, you won't be "changing to a Z Visa", rather going directly from a tourist visa to the Residence Permit. Technically, this is not possible but, as we're talking about China, there really is no "technically". If your employer has the pull and/or the province you're in takes a relaxed approach to these matters, you can do it.

You could also employ one of the visa-for-sure services that have sprung up in recent years, mostly in Shanghai & Beijing. In that case, I believe you would be getting a Z Visa, which you can then turn around and submit for the Residence Permit. High cost = convenience.

Then, yes, Hong Kong is always an option. With papers from your employer in hand, you could even do it the completely kosher way and chill in HK during the turnaround. You'd also get a Z Visa, re-enter the Mainland, and then get the Residence Permit through your employer.

I'm also assuming that when you say "my company couldn't get me a Z via in time", you're not speaking of a school and won't be joining the sad parade of folks who have been duped with that line in the past.

chengdude outlines it pretty nicely for you.

The most surefire way of securing a Z visa is going to China on a tourist visa, going to your school/employer and getting the necessary papers, and then heading to Hong Kong. Once there go to the Chinese embassy in Wan Chai - you can have your Z visa in half a day for a pretty nominal fee...depending on nationality.

That's one of the better explanations I've seen of this problem.

You're probably screwed if you've not got the Z visa by now:

" Visa applicants are increasing in a large number and need longer waiting time in the visa office recently. If you don't reside or work in Hong Kong permanently, you are required to apply Chinese visa from the Embassy or Consulate-General of Peoples' Republic of China in your resident country.

You are welcome to China for tourism, business, visit of the Olympic Games. (Riiiiight)
