Shanghai-Hanoi

hey all. first post.

Im traveling overland from London to Singapore in october this year. 23yo male. the plan so far is London-Moscow-Beijing- X'ian-Shanghai.

my question is that i have a week to travel overland between Shanghai and Hanoi. What would be a suggested itinery between the two, i.e is Chongquing, Wuhan, Shehzhen worthwhile, are hong kong and macau too expensive for a single traveller with modest means, is Guangzhou worth a few days.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I wouldn't travel half way around the world and see Shenzhen but not Hong Kong,

Hong Kong needn't be expensive. It will cost you more than travelling than China, but if you are careful you can do HK and Macau on around US$30 a day.

Are you going to exit China from Guangxi or from Yunnan?
I travelled over land in 2006 from Bangkok to Beijing, border-crossing between Vietnam and China was very ardeous, I thought the Chinese were bureaucratic, but the Vietnamese beat them by many lenght...:-D
If you leave China from Guangxi you could enjoy a bit of the karst scenery around Guilin and Yangshuo, or if you leave China from Yunnan you could take in a bit of the foothills of the Himalayas.
I've been to Wuhan, though only for a short while, and it didn't seems like somewhere where I would spend time, had I only a week in southern China, nor does Chongqing, the pollution in Chongqing was killing me (Chongqing is very hilly, so instead of riding bicycles they use scooters) I only went to Chongqing to start the ChangJiang-river cruise.
Hong Kong is definitely special, and to be seen at some point in your life, but it is pricier than the rest of China.
Best,

For what its worth, I'm doing something similar soon but found fitting HK into an overland route was more arduous travel than expect. So I'm headed Beijing-Shanghai-Xian-Chengdu-Guilin-Hanoi. If you don't have much time then seeing the Yunnan sights is probably out of reach.
