I have just heard from a friend who was trying to make an overland journey from Kathmandu to Beijing. His plan was to get to Lhasa then take the train from Lhasa to Beijing.3
We recently travelled by train from Chengdu to Lhasa and Sims added 400Y to the cost of the train ticket. This was to cover the permit, 30Y worth of food to take on train and 20Y towards the first nights accommodation in Lhasa. So, sorry, have no idea how much for permit or their commission. We never really grow up, we only learn how to act in public.
