Woman Traveling Alone

Hi All,

So im thinking about going to Thailand for about 6 days in the beginning of june...alone. I have done quite a bit of traveling so far in my life and i feel that at this point, im wanting to have a solo adventure. I am curious if anyone has any advice on traveling alone in Thailand? I am thinking of probably going to Bangkok for part of the time and then heading up north to Chiang Mai. I have heard of the civil unrest, yes, but really...is it that bad? I'm planning on staying in hostels for the majority of the time so i can meet other travelers...any advice is appreciated!

thanks muchly

My advice is thus:

Go for as long as possible and have a great time.

i of course would love to go for months on end, but i have a full time job. i work for an airline so get super cheap deals on flights, and thought that for my first trip since joining this company i should just do something radical...

i thought hostels so that i can meet people. since im traveling alone, if i stay in a hotel, i wont really meet that many people...or will i?

any suggestions on good hotels that are not too resorty and well priced?

thailand is easy peasy travelling alone. go to khao san road first if you want to meet people. plenty of decent places to stay around there, no need for hostels here.

1. Bangkok is now safe. Very very hot. (You'll have more chances to be harmed by hot weather) But nowhere in this world is 100% safe all the time

2. Choose hotel to stay is safer for solo woman traveller (& your stuff too) especially in upcountry. Daily rate around 500-600Thb up should be fine. You can make friends at places you choose to hangout.

3. Six days is a bit short but never too short to go up smiling & say hi to people. Though not all of us can speak good English.

Use your instinct and common sense, though.

Check weather before going to beaches. For example, you should avoid Phuket during May-Sep. It's monsoon season.

Will u be staying in Khao Sarn Road? If so be careful of your belongings and yourself, not only local ppl could somehow be hardm, but also the foreigners. Well, not mean to make u scare but be safe. I'm sure you will be enjoying yourself in bangkok. bangkok is cool, you will fancy with food and some cheap stuff shopping around khoa sarn.

try searching here for hostels in BKK

u can contact me, drop me a line in my blog... I am in Bangkok

Although I like Chiang Mai, I wouldn't recommend 2 cities. Why not 3 days in Bangkok then head to Samet for 3 days? Or Pattaya if girllrig's post hasn't put you off.

Six days is not long enough to include Chiang Mai. See Bangkok for a couple days and maybe shoot up to Kanchanaburi and stay in a place along the river (The Jolly Frog, for example) - quite pleasant. Or go to Ko Samet and get a beachside bungalow for a couple days (Try Naga on Ao Pai beach). Both are a few hours from Bangkok and transport easily arranged the day before with a travel agent in BKK. DOn't be overly concerned about personal safety - just use common sense and maybe link up with fellow travelers.

Stay in a decent guesthouse and you can hook up with others. Time would be better spent outside the guesthouse seeing the sights and eating the great food.

never been to thailand, but I'll be there vacationing for a few months in late May, but if you prefer Bangkok plus Chiang Mai - maybe use a sleeper train instead of traveling during the day?

Chiang mai just might be my first stop after bangkok, but I've got a flexible schedule.....I say make plan a and plan b for both the beach or Chiang Mai in case you stumble across cool people heading one way or the other and wing it - play it by ear.

At a minimum it's affordable, you'll have great food, good sites and you aren't stuck doing your job in your usual routine, right?

I think the hotel vs hostel thing needs clarification as so far it can only have confused the original poster:

* Most budget / backpacker type accommodation in Thailand is called 'guesthouse'. Some are small converted family homes, some are more like hotels. Often they don't have things like aircon and TV in the room. They are cheap, and excellent for meeting other travellers.

* 'hostel', if you Google it up, means dorm-like accommodation. There's not a lot of that in Thailand, largely because the guesthouses are so cheap. Some places call themselves hostel (like Suk11) but also there they mostly offer private rooms. This is presumably what ROUGHHABITS was trying to say. :)

I totally agree with Roughhabits on this occasion. See anything BUT Bangkok I'd say. Chances are you'll get another shot at Bangkok in the future, when you have more time, or when you're just passing through, etc. Why be miserable for 6 days in Bangkok when you can also see "Thailand" ?
