What's your nationality? Most do not need a visa for Macau, and a Chinese visa can be got from travel agents in MAcau.

I'd fly to Macau - you can probably dial that number down to $25 a day (although - I've never stayed there overnight so I'm not sure how much hostels are) but food can be super cheap there.

I think you get a visa on arrival, not sure how much, if anything, this costs.

But why go to Shenzhen in order to go to Guangzhou to catch a train? Why not go straight from the Chinese border at Zhuhai to Guangzhou? In a year or two you'll be able to get a fats train from Macau to Guangzhou if you can wait that long - I was checking out one of the tunnels on this line this morning."If you want anything said, ask a man. If you want anything done, ask a woman." Margaret Thatcher
