where to stay in Beijing

Hi --

I am going to Tibet by way of Beijing by train the first part of May. I need a place to stay for 2 nights that is centrally located, friendly, and clean. Any Suggestions??

This summer we stayed at Lhasa Hotel in Tibet. The place was the first hotel there I believe. It used to be a Holiday Inn, so if you can imagine a Holiday inn at the top of the world, there you go. The place was nice and clean, the food was nothing special but we hadnt expected anything quite nice up there. There are a lot of restaurants around there so if you dont want to stay cooped up there I would recommed getting out. There's a plus to the story. The Hotel on the Roof of the World is a very interesting book about the history of the hotel and tourism in Tibet in general. It was the reason that we even visited Tibet, if you read it, don't worry the Hotel has shaped up a LOT.
Hope this helped.

Do you mean you need a place to stay in Beijing? That's how I read the post.

Actually I just saw the title and that is definitely what you mean! Maybe Far East Hostel or Down Town Backpackers. Do a google on them.

Hi. We could recommend 2 rather cheap and very friendly and centrally located options in Beijing very close to each other:
Saga Youth Hostel (is the cheapest - you can get a triple room for 180 yuan, but they had no heating after 1 April which was to cold for us in early April)
New Dragon Youth Hostel (be sure to ask for discounts on the room rate - we stayed 2 adults and 2 kids 5+8 yrs in one large triple room for 238 yuan - official price 328 yuan - and eat your breakfast at Saga, which is better).
both in the same small Hutong-alley just east of DengShiKuo street, in walking distance from the Forbidden city.
On DengShiKou street you will find the Fangyuan hotel which is also rather cheap (220 yuan with discounts for a small double room including simple breakfast) but definitely not clean! We stayed one night here in one of the junior double rooms downstairs, but had to move (to New Dragon YH) beause of loads of dust and dirt in the corners as well as in the carpets, which had not seen a vaccuum cleaner that year! They seem to abuse the good reports in the LP 2005-ed. book.
