Maybe something like...Chengdu for a couple of days, Xi'an for a couple of days, Beijing for a week. Then head back towards Yunnan. I suggest you don't get too stressed by the October 1st holiday. If you are in China for that just deal with it, certainly wouldn't bother trying to leave. Maybe time things so you arrive in Beijing just before it and spend the week in Beijing. The problem is when you try to move around you may not get train tickets. If you are flexible with timing I don't think it is a huge hassle. Of course if you are in Beijing for that week there will be CROWDS at all the tourist sites but if you are laid back and consider that part of the whole China experience then that isn't too bad. My parents came during the May holiday once and all their photos at places like Tian'an'men were just a sea of black heads - but hey, that is all part of China.Veronica explains life "working is not good for your complexion and fertility. woman should stay home and bake."
