Travellers Cheques

Quick question on Travellers Cheques - do the major places accept UK Sterling TC's or should i just bring them all in dollars (id lose out on exchange rate), also will all the major banks accept TC's?

Also when going from China to Hong Kong where should i change money? - Should i do it before i get to HK (to the train/bus station) and is it possible to exchange my UK pounds into HK dollars - same question about Macau - can i change UK pounds into Macau currency.

When in Beijing is it possible to exchange any Yuan or UK pounds into Mongolian Tugrik as i cant get this currency here?
thanx!!

OP, if you are from the UK, take pounds.

In China most banks and FEX counters have similar rates. Usually TCs have a small charge for exchange, cash has none.

If you feel comfortable carrying cash, cash (pounds) is usually better than TCs.

If there is no food, isn't that food for thought?

i will be going for a long time so dont feel safe carrying too much cash hence i think i will get some TC's (anyone know if sterling are as easy to change as dollar TC's) - i will also take a debit card but its got a high transaction fee (couldnt get the nationwide one as they mucked up my application and i only realised till too late:/)

20 pound notes can be changed - as long as they are not ripped or in poor condition.

Hi Rob,
No worries at all about UK TCs. I use American Express, but any other will do the trick to.
Macau and Hong kong dollars are interchangable. As the Chinese Yuan is quite a hard currency and is actually worth a tad more than the HK/Macau dollars now - any traders at the border will gladly change Yuan to either one for you, for free.
Enjoy your trip

Take an atm card, as well as Amex TC, & Cash, The 3 different forms are good backups to each other. eg if there's a power failure, atms won't work. If your card is lost/ stolem/ damaged, you can scrape by on Travellers Cheques. Use a concealed money belt too.

ps: Some banks in smaller towns don't accept TC, but almost every town in China has a "Bank of China" that accepts atm cards with visa, cirrus, or mastercard logos.
