I lived in GZ for 4 years.
Department stores are often ripoffs.
What do you want to shop for?
You will not be able to get fake merchandise as it is all hidden during Canton Fair time.
100-500 rmb per day for translators.
Most shops are open late.
Beijing Lu, the area around LiWan Plaza, shopping malls like Grandview and TeeMall.
Getting around by Metro is very easy and cheap.
Watch out for pickpockets and laptop thieves!!
What part of the city will you be staying in?
Are you vegetarian?

cheers from Ruth

Department Stores are not recommended. There is an exporting clothes/accessories wholesale market in Zhanxi Lu, right behind the Provincial Bus Station and near the Guangzhou Railway Station (West), with whole bunch of world's famous brand and other stuff available, fake but in good quality. People who know this place are most in fashion business.

It's easy to take a Metro to. When getting out of the metro station and seeing the provincial bus station, just walk along the street a bit further down. There are 2 buildings. If you can't find it, just follow the Chinese porters who are in red uniforms running between the 2 buildings to move bags for those traders.

one more thing...Bargain hard!! Your translator will know the technique.

95% beautiful clothes in small boutiques of Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou and other main cities in China, are sourced from this market. If you go there, the chance is that you will be surprised to witness the primitive supply chain vs the prosperous fashion business in China.

I'll give a bit more directions to Salma's suggestion above.

The 'Western Clothes Market' described above...you get off the Metro at Guangzhou Zhan or train station. Not the East one, the main one. Go to the E exit, come up the stairwell and go right. At the back of the stairwell, there is a street going right. You'll see the bus station across the road. Turn right. You'll pass a post office. Go one block and turn left at the end of the street; you'll see the watch market there. Then keep walking along this street, ZhanXi Lu, and you'll find large buildings and stalls on the street. (There are more than 2 buildings, Salma.)Go to the end of the street and the shoe market is on the right.

cheers from Ruth

Translators: Booking through the hotel can set you back Y500 per 8 hr day or more plus a lunch plus overtime rates. Outside the entrance at the trade fair, you will see plenty of students with placards declaring they speak English. Talk to a few to see how good they are. They will work for around Y200 per day, negotiable. Don't be hard on them. They are usually the most willing to help.

Keep banging those rocks together, guys.

The Science & Technology Museum metro stop has quite a lot of vendors. Fake or not, I really can't be bothered.
Otherwise if you're arriving in time for an end-of-season sale, try the malls on Nanjing Lu pedestrian street and around Xujiahui.
Cheers!

Shanghai Museum, Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Centre, Shanghai Municipal History Museum, Old City area, French Concession area, Jade Buddha Temple.
Of course there're tours available but they might not go where you want to be going.
Cheers!
