Bahasa Indonesia language book

I will be spending a lot of time in Indonesia over the next few years. Can anyone recommend a language book just to get me started before I begin with a language course?

thank you!

Other than the LP phrase books there ae several teach youself language kits which include a book and CD/cassette. This includes "Teach yourself Indonesian" and" ROutledge Colloquial Indonesian". They have chapters sorted by topics such as Greetings, directions and eating out, each chapter has a dialogue with vocabulary and grammar and exercises to practice them.

Selamat pagi!
Also, you could try one of these links on the Net. They contain some useful vocabulary and basic information about the grammar.

For a thorough introduction, with good vocab, proper grammar and all, I find this book the best.
The catch is that it teaches you such a nice, formal version of the language that you will only ever hear it on TV, but never on the streets in Indonesia.

For actual communication/travel purposes, phrasebooks with grammar notes may be the best bet, backed up by a dictionary.

My info & thoughts:
on East-Indonesia.info: Indonesia, West Papua, Maluku, Ternate, Ambon, Saparua, Banda, Kei
on VirtualTourist.com: Papua New Guinea, Philippines, New Caledonia, Eritrea, Djibouti
on Thorn Tree: Seeing Orangutans, Kalimantan, SE Asia Islands FAQ thread & Samoa Warnings

I agree with Laszlo, that the Yohanni Johns book is the best. I would suggest that you also obtain the cassette tapes that go with this book.

From day one in learning Indonesian, it is important to get the pronounciation right.

Trying to learn Indonesian purely from a book will result in errors in pronounciation that are extremely difficult to unlearn

I haven't tried that particular Yohanni Johns book but I have two others by Yohanni Johns and they are very helpful and easy. Anyway, Laszlo always gives the best advice !
