Shanghai or Hong Kong?

Hello,

I am visiting China for about 16 days at the end of June/start of July (I know it's going to be hot!) We're planning on going to Beijing, Xian & Yangshou - we have time to visit one more place on our trip & are thinking of either HK or Shanghai (as we have to return to a city to fly home). Any advice on which is best to visit? We would have approx 3 days & like to get out & do things - it seems like in HK there's more to see & do? Which would you rather visit?

Also - i've been told that China doesn't have short opening times on Sundays as the West does - is this right? Is there any equivilent day that the main tourist sites (Terracotta Warriors, Fobidden City, Wall etc etc) have shorter opening hours/are closed. I don't think there are any national holidays or festivals at the end of June or the first half of July - can anyone confirm this?

Thanks for all your help!

I would definitely choose Shanghai over Hong Kong! Hong Kong is a great city, but there really isn't very much to see or do there, beyond shopping (and most of the stuff you can get in China at a cheaper price anyways). If you are looking for a complete China experience, you have got to see Shanghai and 3 days would give you enough time to see the main sites of the city.

I would pick Hong Kong because everything works and it is much closer to Yangshuo. Shanghai is just another big city, and being very western, won't give you the "China Experience" #1 mentions. (nor will Hong Kong, but I suggest that for different reasons).

perhaps you can add Hangzhou instead.

Agree with #2. I LOVE Hong Kong. It is such a beautiful city, and there is plenty to do, including some great day trips to outer islands and villages.

Regarding tourist sites, I highly recommend avoiding the weekends. Most places are jammed on Saturday and Sunday with local tourists, as this is their day off. So if you can, go during the week...

Both are very similar. Big cities with very few sites to see compared to other places in China but still a lot of "big city" stuff to do. I'd vote HK because it's history makes it unique from the rest of the mainland. Shanhai's very nice, but at the end of the day, it's just another supersized mainland city when compared with HK.

I would pick Shanghai.
You're right, the opening hours are the same daily, regardless of whether it's a Sunday or not. No major holidays in that time period.
Cheers!

I vote for Hong kong to. Hong kong is in somehow a mix there western and Asia culture meet each other. I also think the skylines are more impressive than in Shanghai, it seems like the one that have the most impressing building when he dies, he wins :)
but if you look for good night life i would choose Shanghai.
