Hi AP,4
Difficult to decide for you what the best option is (Money? Time? Ease of travelling? Where do you need to be in Guangzhou?).6
I am studying in HK and have gone to the airport a few times and just went to Guangzhou last week, so here's my advice:8
The direct buses from HK airport are probably the best way for you then.

People buy tickets for them when they arrive - generally for the next bus that is leaving with seats on it. I doubt if you will have to wait more than half an hour. Online booking is unlikely, and probably not advisable as your flight may not be on time.
