Any hotel recommendations for Torres d. Paines

My wife and I have 4 days to spend in Patagonia. We are looking to stay in one of the hotels in the Park. We know that it is expensive but can't persuade a bad knee to hike the circuit. Day hikes will work for us. Is the weather still OK around April 15th. We are coming from Wisconsin where the lakes are still frozen so cold is relative but rain and more rain can be a bummer. Hosteria las Torres seems like a central location. Anyone been there. Need a reservation this late in the season?

Thanks.

You could day hike to Campamento Torres from Hosteria Las Torres, but you'll need about 5-6 hrs for the round trip. That doesn't include the climb up/down from Torres base (a must) which is a 30-40min boulder hop each way which could be pretty hard on the knees. Hosteria Las Torres looks quite lavish (albeit touristy) from a quick look inside the lobby. Rack rates displayed there were very expensive (like US$400/night), not sure for April.

Paine Grande on Lago Pehoe probably offers the most day hiking options since you can access Lago Grey or Valle de Frances from there. I think the rates there are about US$60 per twin.

If you have your own rental car, there are some other options:
Camping Pehoe which is an excellent campground & quite centrally located. It has the advantage of being much cheaper than the Hosteria (about US$10 pp) & has a great little restaurant which serves good dinners for a reasonable cost. Posada Rio Serrano a bit further south is rustic & about $50 for a twin room. The restaurant there also serves surprisingly good meals.

According to a ranger we spoke to, April is a good season for hiking due to much fewer people & more stable weather. Temps will be a bit colder than March but not much snow is expected then.

If money isn`t too much of a worry, look up the Hotel Remota in Puerto Natales. It is a class act, the rooms are beautiful and service is very friendly. The tours through the park are excellent and can involve as much or as little walking as you like. It may seem expensive, but take into account that EVERYTHING (food, alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks and excursions as well) is included, whereas all the other places in the park (with the excepcion of the Explora hotel) charge huge extras (day tour of the park, e.g. U$140, dinner U$40, bottle of wine U$30 etc.). The other recommendations for places to stay inside the park are good. I would say that Refugio Paine Grande is poor value for money, as their staff is quite rude. The refugio on Lake Pehoe would be a good bet. Don`t whatever you do stay at the HosterĂa Tyndall - it is miles away from the main areas of the park and is very poor value for money.

The prices that I have quoted above are from the HosterĂa Las Torres (which is indeed a beautiful hotel in a very good location).

At the end of the Circuit I splurged and stayed in one of the lesser rooms at Hosteria Las Torres - this was 4 years ago and it was over $200 for the two of us. The room was okay, but the dining room was very nice and the newer section of the Hosteria probably had nicer rooms. From pictures I've seen recently it looks like they've made more "improvements" to the Hosteria so perhaps those lesser rooms are nolonger available. It is very conveniently located if you want to do a day hike to the Torres viewpoint. While its a bit of a scramble up the last stretch t viewpoint, you should be able to do this as a day hike. You could also head over to the area where the boat goes out to Refugio Paine and spend a couple of days there doing day hikes as #2 states.

Abril is usually a very good month weather wise. You might also consider El Chalten. It is easier to get to spectacular places in the mountains and glaciars with less walking and there are much more options for lodging avaible.

If you are flying into El Calafate, Nahuel's suggestion is a great one for a 4 day trip. The hiking is also spectacular in El Chalten, and would be quite a bit easier on your knees (and there are many more lodging + dining options). If you're going to Puerto Natales, then 4 days is not enough time to get over to El Chalten. Both places are beautiful - you'll have a great time wherever you decide to go!

not this year, but exceptions only confirm the rule!
