Tourist visa while in China

I am currently in China on a Z visa. I would like to do some traveling after my job assignment ends. I have found other postings on this site that say you can't extend a Z visa. That confirms what I have been told. Is it possible to obtain a tourist visa while you are in China, without leaving the country? I've been told I can't. I'm rather far from any of the borders so I really don't want to travel out in order to travel back in.

Yes you can, but you have to play nice with your soon-to-be former employer. They can get a short extension to allow travel or extra time to exit the country, but it's a hassle and (of course) costs, which is why some employers will stonewall. They can also convert your Residence Permit to a standard L Visa, which is much easier and something many employers are willing to do if you aren't just chattel to them. If they play dumb, perhaps suggest you would pick up the cost of converting the Permit. If that's a no-go, put on some presentable clothes, head over to the Entry-Exit Bureau of the PSB in your area, and plead your case in a pleasant and professional manner. If the gods are smiling, they'll tell you to come back something like 10-14 days before your RP's expiration and start the conversion process.

Also, please get your nomenclature right: your Z Visa was cancelled when you received your Residence Permit; it's just a useless sticker in your passport now. The Residence Permit is the active document you are dealing with.

where in China are you?

The shortest sentence is "I am", the longest is "I do".
