It's an interesting place, a bit remote but worth the effort. I's in Western Sichuan, historically a crossroads of civilizations. It's also the subject of a very famous Chinese love song. "The Kangding Lovesong"http://thewanderingant.com/travels/betel-nut.html

There may have been 'unique Khampa charm' in the past, but sorry, Kangding today is every bit the noisy, sprawling frontier city you'd imagine the de facto nexus of all travel in Western Sichuan to be. From about 8AM to 9PM or so, the sound of honking horns drowns out the whitewater river flowing through town, while lots of government ƽͷ thugs in their Mitsubishi 4WD's would just as soon run you down than stop at a red light. Use it as a base to move further along to Litang or wherever...or check out some of the surrounding sights, but don't go to KD thinking you'll be hanging out in some charming, laid-back Wild West outpost.9
#6...Kangding is known as Dartsedo in Tibetan.
