Generally, getting a visa extension anywhere in the Tibet Autonomous Region is difficult to do. I had a long talk with the PSB in Lhasa last summer and they gave me some information. If you are running out of time on your visa and you arrange a trip through a travel agency in Lhasa, the travel agency can give you an itinerary that you can take to the PSB office in Lhasa. The PSB will extend your visa for the duration of your trip and add 3 to 5 additional days for you to leave China. In other regions of China you can get a 30 day extension without any problems, but in the TAR it is a little more difficult. Other people have reported going to the PSB without an arranged trip and were given a 7 day extension, though they asked for a 30.

If you haven't gotten your visa yet, it seems possible to get at least 60 days in the US now.
