Shamian island hotels

Hi!

I'm goint to Guangzhou this june and was wondering where to stay. Shamian islands seems appealing and now I wonder which hotels there are good? Guangdong Victory seemed nice, any experiences? Also, is it better to book in advance trough Asia Rooms for example or just to get to room in China? Trough internet the price for Victory seemed to be 46 euros, about 460 RMB.

Thanks!

I was thinking something a bit more upscale, a proper hotel I mean. An preferrably in Shamian?

Yea, a bit too upscale... :) I was thinking in the category under 50 eur. 40 is a bit salty but the Victory hotel does seem nice... Something aroud 30 would be great. And I definitely need a quiet place since I sleep quite light and bad these days due to stress... :(

Youth Hostel is a bit of a misnomer. They have comfortable, upscale motel rooms for around 150 yuan a night. Recommended. I stayed there in 1999.

The Guangdong Victory is fine. I've stayed there a couple of times. Try to stay in the main building, not the annex.
I used to reserve on the internet. Now I just have one of the hotel pimps at the airport or the Airport Express bus stop reserve one for me. Usually I get a good deal.

We stayed at the Shamian Youth Hostel last november. It was easily the best, cleanest hotel/hostel we've had in China. Much better than any 2or 3 'star' hotel we've previously had in China. Double room was 200 yuan/night. There's a breakfast place in the White Swan hotel opposite. Take care: (souvenir) shops in the neighborhood are expensive

An "in-between" hotel that I've used twice when the YH was full is the Overseas Chinese Hotel - a bit dingy with that lovely "hotel brown" decor, but seemed clean enough. It is in the LP with the phone number ( 020)8121 8218 I think I paid 250 for a triple a few months ago
